Copyright page generator

KDP. Its Intellectual Property Rights FAQ says: "Amazon does not require you to include a copyright page. If you would like your book to have a copyright page, you must incorporate it into your content file." It also says: "The copyright page included in the book content is not sufficient to prove that you hold the necessary publishing rights."

United States. The U.S. Copyright Office's Circular 3 says: "Copyright notice is optional for unpublished works, foreign works, or works published on or after March 1, 1989." It also says notice "does not require permission from, or registration with, the Copyright Office." The benefit it lists for a published work: "a notice may prevent a defendant in a copyright infringement action from attempting to limit his or her liability for damages or injunctive relief based on an innocent infringement defense."

India. Section 13(1) of the Copyright Act, 1957 says copyright "shall subsist throughout India" in "original literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works". Section 13(2) adds conditions for a published work: it is "first published in India, or where the work is first published outside India, the author is at the date of such publication, or in a case where the author was dead at that date, was at the time of his death, a citizen of India". A notice is not among the conditions in section 13. This page does not say what other Indian rules may apply to a book; ask a qualified professional about your own case.

Copyright © year owner. Circular 3: "A notice consists of three elements that generally appear as a single continuous statement": the copyright symbol ©, the word "copyright" or the abbreviation "copr."; "The year of first publication of the work"; and "The name of the copyright owner." Its example is "© 2017 John Doe". The generator uses the symbol and the word together, with the year and owner you enter; if you leave the owner blank it uses the author.

All rights reserved, and the sentence after it. Conventional, optional. Circular 3's list of the elements of a notice does not include it, and none of the sources below asks for it. The sentence is a common form of words for reuse permission, not one taken from a source.

Published by. Conventional, optional. If you use your own ISBN, KDP's ISBN and imprint help says you "must enter the same details (i.e. book title, author name, publisher) in KDP that you used to register the ISBN". That is about what you enter in KDP; keeping the page consistent with it is sensible.

Edition. Conventional, optional. Whatever you type is printed as you type it.

ISBN lines. KDP: "Each format of your book (paperback vs hardcover) needs its own ISBN. eBooks and low-content books are the only formats where an ISBN is optional."
